The kit

How do I make Forest Clay?
Forest Clay is A New Field’s first biomaterial and is purposefully simple to make. You’ll need to head out into the world to forage for pine cones or pine needles, use some regular kitchen tools to break those down and then combine them with our mix to make the clay. It’s like making a cake with cake mix! Comprehensive instructions are included with every kit.

What can I create with the kits?
With each kit, you’ll have enough material to try to make all three of our projects. If you’ve bought a kit with a biomaterial mould then this will help you get that project right every time, but all of the kits contain enough material and guides to make all three projects.

Animal Transformers | You’ll make our creature’s bodies, legs and decorations, which you can combine in hundreds of different ways.

Candle Stackers | You’ll make shapes which, when stacked, are able to hold a candle.

Marble Runners | You’ll make a marble maze with walls and bumpers, which you can design however you like.

Are the products truly eco-friendly?
Everything in the kit has been carefully selected to be as ecologically friendly as possible and we want to be as transparent as possible with our supply chain.

  • The box is plastic free and fully recyclable. Along with our tissue, it comes from our partners at Sourceful who specialise in sustainable packaging.

  • The moulds are made of compostable bioplastic, from our partners at Bio Plastic Shop in the Netherlands. We use the compostable Fibernyl, which is made from elephant grass.

  • The paint powder in the kit is sourced from Natural Earth Paint and is made from earth, mineral pigments, gum arabic and corn starch.

  • Our pouches are made from biodegradable kraft paper and are sealed with a PLA ziplock, which is a bioplastic made from renewable, plant-based materials.

  • Our soy-based candles are made in Germany, the marble for the Marble Runner kit is made of mud and the wooden sticks for the Animal Transformers are fully recyclable and biodegradable.

  • Our patches are made from 100% recycled post-consumer polyester, which means they come mainly from fast-fashion waste and plastic bottles. This is the only synthetic plastic in our kit and recycled polyester thread is often sold as a more green alternative to virgin polyesters. Whilst that might be true, we’re hoping this is a stop over on the way to finding even more sustainable ways to bring you great products and experiences. With the patch, we’re hoping it’s something you’ll want to keep, but if you don’t then you can recycle it again.

How long does it take to complete a project?
An A New Field project can be completed over the course of a morning or afternoon.

Foraging for materials can take as long as you’d like, but we’d expect you to be able to collect everything you need in under an hour, not including travel.

Drying out the materials in an oven, breaking them down and mixing them with the mix should take about 90 minutes.

If you’re going for record speed, you should be able to make the project very quickly, followed by about 90 minutes of baking and cooling. However, we suggest spending as much time as is fun when making and decorating the projects.

It’s also possible to split the process over several sessions. Forage in the morning, mix in the afternoon, store your Forest Clay somewhere cool and damp (eg. wrapped in a tea towel in the fridge) and come back to the making part later or the next day.

Do you offer instructions or tutorials?
Your kit comes with detailed, illustrated instructions for each step of the process. In future we’ll be adding online video tutorials to this website and our social media channels.

What is the difference between the kits and which should I choose?
All of our Forest Clay kits contain everything you need to make the Animal Transformers, Candle Stackers and Marble Runners projects.

The Freestyle kit contains the materials you’ll need, along with card templates for each of the three projects.

The Explore kit contains the materials you’ll need, along with a bioplastic mould for one of the three projects, and card templates for the remaining two projects. You can select which mould you would like on the Explore shop page.

The Ultimate kit contains the materials you’ll need, along with a bioplastic mould for each of the three projects.

Are all of the ingredients and paints included safe and non-toxic?
Everything in the kit is non-toxic. However due to the high salt content we strongly advise against consuming the Forest Clay mix.

Are the kits suitable for children?
We believe our kits can be enjoyed by anyone from ages 5 to 95, but adult supervision and support should be given to anyone under the age of 16

Foraging

What is foraging?
Foraging is searching for wild or naturally available resources. Traditionally foraging is associated with finding wild food, but at A New Field we think that same attitude can be applied to lots of different abundant natural resources.

I have no experience of foraging, will I be able to use the kit?
Don’t worry, you can still use the kit! In fact, the kit is designed specifically to try and introduce more people to the idea of foraging, so we include clear instructions on where to look and how much to take.

How do I forage safely and responsibly?
The National Trust provides a lovely guide on how to forage safely and responsibly, which we think is simple and easy to follow. In general, the two rules are:

  1. only take what you need and leave enough for others — whether they’re people or animals!

  2. If you’re not sure, leave it. It’s important to be certain you know what you’re collecting. But don’t worry! A New Field recipes only require foraging for safe, easily identifiable items so the risk of misidentification is extremely low (this rule is more appropriate for foraging things like mushrooms).

Will foraging for pine cones or pine needles be restricted by the season?
Pinecones fall in Autumn, so between October and December is the best season. You can find fallen pine cones all year round, but they’ll get less fresh as time passes. Pine trees are evergreen, so pine needles can be found all year round!

Can I store my foraged pine nuts/needles to use at a later date?
With pinecones and pine needles, make sure to dry them out immediately after returning home — 60 degrees celcius in the oven for 30 to 40 minutes should be enough — otherwise there’s risk of them going mouldy. Once they’re dry, you can store them in an airtight container, like tupperware, for much longer but we recommend using them within a couple of weeks.

Do I need any particular tools or equipment to forage?
You’ll just need a bag to store what you find whilst you’re out and about. We recommend using gloves as well and always washing your hands after handling foraged materials.

Where can I find the materials I need to forage?
The best foraging grounds for pinecones are under conifer trees in woods, parks and gardens. Be sure to avoid private land or seek the permission of the landowner before entering.

How much material do I need to forage?
You’ll need 250g of foraged pinecones, which is about 30-50 small ones. Always leave plenty behind so the cones can do their natural thing too.

Can I forage in my local park or forest?
Check local regulations before foraging. Some parks and forests have rules against removing natural materials.

How do I prepare the foraged materials for use in the kit?
Our kit contains instructions on preparing the materials for use with our Forest Clay mix.

What if I can't find the required materials? Can I substitute different materials?
If you’re unable to find pine cones or needles, don’t worry! We thought that might happen to some folks. The Forest Clay recipe is flexible enough that you can substitute another ‘woody’ material in the place of cones or needles. You might use acorn husks from an oak tree or bark from a fallen log. Be sensible and avoid funguses and other potentially dangerous materials.

Extras

Can I buy additional materials or refills?
Not yet, but this is top of our to-do list! We’re hoping to have top-up mix packs and sets of natural paints on the shopfront soon.

Do you offer gift cards?
We don’t currently offer gift cards.
